The Murcia Matchplay League was formed in 2007 at a meeting in the clubhouse of Hacienda Del Alamo. Founder members were Alex McLennan, Billy Sim (Golf Director of Hacienda del Alamo) and Steven Haskins (Captain of HDA).
Having played in the Vega Baja league for some years, it was felt by many players that the stableford format adopted by that league did nothing to test the competitive skills of the golfers taking part and it seemed obvious that a matchplay format would be an ideal way to correct this.
Alex therefore set up the new “Murcia Matchplay League” in a way that would be simple to administer, would utilise all eighteen holes of the match and would involve playing the best courses in the Murcia area at the best possible price. This has been achieved so successfully (with a few minor “tweaks” along the way) that our league is now the best known and most widely respected in the Murcia area.
Season 2015/2016 saw Mick Hardy taking over as secretary of the league and it reverting to just one large division again, with 10 teams taking part. There will again be 10 teams competing for honours in season 2017/2018, including two new ones, one of which is an all ladies team! The end of season presentation will be held at the final league match.
A full list of fixtures for the season has been sent out to all societies taking part in the league. All teams taking part are expected to adhere to the dress code of the courses. We recommend a pool of at least 20 players for your squads. Teams (names and handicaps) should be given to Mick Hardy at least five days before matches, although changes are allowed up until one hour before tee off.
We assure all teams and players in the league, a very enjoyable, competitive time with us, playing matchplay golf at some of the best courses but at the lowest prices!
